Study: No IBD Risk With Acne Drug Isotretinoin

A a study published in JAMA Dermatology counters the notion that the prescription acne drug Accutane [isotretinoin] raises the risk of Crohn’s disease or colitis in women. In fact, the study of more than 45,000 women found no such link between Accutane…use and these illnesses, which are collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Investigators “failed to find an association between isotretinoin and IBD in a meta-analysis that included the present study, three large published epidemiological studies, and one large unpublished study. Medscape also points out, “The drug, which is the only US Food and Drug Administration-approved medication for severe acne, is the target of thousands of lawsuits. The lawsuits have made dermatologists skittish, an editorial accompanying the study acknowledged, although the editorialists agreed that the drug shouldn’t be withheld from patients who need it.
