Senate Approves Bill Allowing New Sunscreen Ingredients

The US Senate passed a bill that could result in more sunscreen ingredients coming to the market. The bill requires the FDA to decide whether to approve “pending sunscreen ingredients within a shorter period of time.” Supporters of legislation have urged faster action from the agency, so people have access to the “most up-to-date” sunscreens to “protect their skin from cancer-causing UVA rays.” Highlighting the significance of the development, Time notes that although skin cancer is the “most common cancer” in the US, “eight sunscreen ingredients have been pending in FDA backlog for years.”
