Over A Quarter Of High School Girls Use Tanning Beds

A number of media outlets report on the results of a study from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which found increasing rates of girls using tanning beds, putting themselves at risk for skin cancer. A report from the American Medical Association has found that approximately “29% of white high school girls use tanning beds.” The study also found that one-quarter “of white women ages 18 to 34…have used a tanning bed in the past year.” A survey from the American Academy of Dermatology in 2011 “found that 32% of white women under the age of 30 had visited a tanning parlor in the previous year,” with 8% visiting weekly. Tanning beds are widely believed to have played a large role in the increasing rates of skin cancer in recent decades,” with melanoma rates rising “sharply among young white women in particular.”
