New Treatments Offer Hope To Metastatic Melanoma Patients

“Remarkable” advancements have been made in treating patients with metastatic melanoma. According to Jeffrey S. Weber, MD, PhD, “Five years ago, melanoma was regarded as a malignancy where there was very little hope for patients with metastatic disease. [Today,] it’s a very different story.” Even in such a relatively short time span, newly approved medications have prolonged survival and given patients and physicians more options. Such advances include targeted therapies like vemurafenib and dabrafenib and the kind of immune therapy that led Bloomberg News to title a 2013 story “Death Sentence No Longer A Given For Patients With Skin Cancer.”
