Digital Aids May Help Improve Patient Performance Of Skin Self-Exams.

Patients’ performance of skin self-exams improved significantly after a three-month program of computerized patient education, skin exam tutorials, and electronic reminders, according to a study published online in the Archives of Dermatology. In a 227-patient study, “as compared with a control group, patients randomized to the intervention were more than twice as likely to perform skin self-examination and were almost three times more likely to report confidence in their ability to identify melanoma, investigators reported.” In addition, “performing skin self-examination also was associated with improved recognition of individual risk of melanoma,” the study authors found.
